In April, the swamp plays host to the Great Dismal Swamp Birding Festival. This is the perfect way to celebrate spring. The weather has finally gotten warm enough for you to enjoy the outdoors, and wildlife experts will guide you through the swamp, educating you about the different birds that call the swamp home and pointing out some truly excellent photo ops. The event is free and family friendly. In addition to the guided tours, you’ll learn about bird banding, be invited to canoe through the swamp, and participate in several fun workshops.

Even though it’s a fairly new event, the Legends of Main Street: A Suffolk Ghost Walk has already become wildly popular. The event takes place over several days and isn’t for the easily frightened. This event takes place over several weekends. Although kids are invited to partake in the ghost walks, organizers advise parents to consider how easily their young children get scared.
