Fishing in Hampton Roads

The location of Hampton Roads makes it a great place for the fishing lover to settle down. Not only will they be able to enjoy the perks of being able to fish in both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, but they’ll also find themselves living in a community that takes fishing very seriously.

Fish From Piers

Hardly a day goes by when you won’t find at least one Hampton Roads child standing on a pier with a line dangling in the water, often in the company of their parents or grandparents. Fishing year round is one of the great things about living in the Hampton Road area.

Fishing from the Hampton Roads piers is one of the best ways to teach your child about fishing. It’s a safe environment that allows you and your child to enjoy the act of fishing without having to worry about many of the things that can happen while doing the same thing in a boat. If your young child gets bored or tired, they can take a nap, play, or go swimming. Since fish love hanging out around the piers there’s a good chance you’ll catch dinner.

Your child can enjoy fishing and a day in the sun for less than $10 and will have an opportunity to catch a wide variety of fish including flounder and mullet. Many kids love sitting on the peir, dangling a hunk of turkey in the water and using it to bait crabs.

Marina’s

If you and your family love to fish and spend time on the water, you’re going to love life in Hampton Roads. The area is home to several wonderful marinas which provide you with a safe and affordable place to keep your boat. Some, like Joy’s Marina are located so that you will be able to walk to them from downtown Hampton Roads. The marina’s make it possible for you to enjoy full use of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Keeping a boat in one of the local marinas not only makes it possible for you to enjoy all of the perks of living so close to the water and numerous fishing opportunities while also stimulating the economy.

Hampton Roads marinas include:

  • Joy’s Marina
  • Leeward Municipal Marina
  • Salt Ponds Marina Resort
  • Sunset Boating Center

Fishing Tournaments

Catchin’ for Kids

The Catchin’ for Kids tournament started out as a chance to help the underprivileged children living in Hampton Roads. The tournament not only allows anglers to do the thing they love the most, competitive fishing, but also allows them to help their community. The goal of the Catchin’ for Kids tournament is to have as much fun as humanely possible, while also collecting toys, games, and books for the local Toys for Tots program. The event takes place early in December and provides entertainment for the entire family.

Bass-Jons

If you love to fish, whether competitively or for pleasure of East Coast Living in Hampton Roads, you’re going to want to check out Bass-Jons. Not only are they the number one source of all Hampton roads fishing information, but they also host a wonderful bass tournament that all of their members can take part in. The completion has slots for anglers that prefer fishing from boats, as well as a division for those who prefer to stay on the land.
